BLOG CHANGING!! IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE READ!!!

Dear friends and readers,
Due to some possible issues that may come up in about a year's time not to mention my own ineptitude to handle having three (maybe four?) different blogs at once, I have decided to change this blog. I have switched over to another username (one that is not in danger of being removed dur to the fact that it is a school email and I am almost done with school!!) and will be using that blog to blog EVERYTHING from now on. Let me repeat that: EVERYTHING WILL BE ON ONE BLOG!!! I know! Crazy right?! For some reason I seemed to be unable to do that in the past and now I'm getting slightly confused as to what qualifies for what blog and so on, so I'm gonna give myself another shot at it. I wil have one blog called "The Backup Zone". This blog started today and from today on, it will be the blog that I use.
I will copy this to both "Fish on the Fly" and "Fashion Bean", but I wanted everyone to know this!
I love you all, and I hope that you will come over and look at my new blog some time! :)
Over and out,
Bean :)

Ode to a Spell Checker

The following poem is on my mousepad in the office space where I work some days during the week. I find it really cute and funny and really just wanted to share it today since I don't have much else to do right now :P

Ode to a Spelling Checker
(or, why explicit spelling instruction is so important)

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques for my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike sum keys and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong or write
It shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore to long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.
-Author Unknown

Alright, I just thought that it would be something good for people to look at and think a little about what you are actually writing and not to rely too heavily on spell checker, because it is true, there are no misspelled words in this poem! How sad is that?

Have a good day!

Time...What to do with it?

Alright, so I finally have some time in my schedule to do kinda whatever I want (within reason of course!). Since I am currently in a non-paid internship for the remainder of the summer, I have no homework or other work that really needs to be done. This is the strangest thing I have had in a long while! The worst part right now is that I don't really have an income. I am living at my parent's place which does make sense but I need to start looking for things for me to do while I'm home doing nothing.
I will (hopefully) be able to get more blogging in and maybe will be able to continue to figure out more about myself in that process as well as make friends (eventually would be a hope!). I also want to read. I haven't had the time to sit down and read in over a year I would say. Last summer was much busier than this summer so I didn't have the time. I also hope to take more pictures this summer. I got a cute camera last Christmas and I hope to be able to use it more and more! I will also be trying to cook a bit more. I will share as much as I can with you between my blogs (all three my dears!).
Today is a sort of milestone as far as the blogging part goes cause technically I have blogged on all three of my blogs in one day (I know it's like 1am right now so not really, but I have not yet gone to bed, so it still counts in my book!)
Anyways, pictures should come more starting tomorrow-ish. Tomorrow is Fish Day: The World's Biggest One Day Outdoor Fish Fry! Yes, we here are very proud of our fish :P I will take as many pictures as I can and try to get things going that way. I hope to continue this for the rest of the summer!
Alright, off to bed for me :) Finally!
Have a wonderful weekend you wonderful people!
Love,
Bean :)

Cheetah Facts

Alright, one of my favorite types of animals is the cheetah. I have always loved how serene and intelligent and almost royal they look, not to mention the big fact: how fast they run! I was lucky enough to see some when I was visited Africa on safari with my father when I was young. They have always fascinated me and I have always wanted to learn about them. The following facts are ones that I've learned over the years from books, online as well as from watching documentaries and Animal Planet.

95% of all cheetah cubs are killed before adulthood. Most are eaten by lions, others starve.

The more nervous/anxious a cheetah mother is, the better the chance of survival her cubs will have.

Survival for the cheetahs: run faster, live better. Patience is key. One instant can change if a cheetah will live or die.

Stalking is almost as important as the speed is for the

A cheetah, being a sprinter can only cover about 400-600 yards before exhausting themselves. Ideally they would want to be within 70 yards of their pray before starting their sprint.

As they run only one foot touches the ground at a time, each foot has semi retractable claws which act as cleats, propelling them across the ground.

Tails are stiff to assist with turning quickly.
The black "tears" are believed to be a way to keep to the sun from hurting their eyes. The rumor/myth was that they were tears the cheetah had cried because they were not accepted with the other big cats.

A cheetah's spots are as unique as fingerprints and change depending on the individual cheetah.

During the sprint the cheetahs breath rate can double from 60 bpm to 120 bpm.

It can take a cut up to 3 years to really get their hunting skill down. As adults, cheetahs can catch and suffocate their pray in seconds.

Critical months for the cheetah adolescents are right after they turn 14 months, this is when they learn to hunt for themselves before they leave their mothers and are out on their own. Yet at this age they can not yet hunt on their own.

Cheetahs hunt during the day, so they don't have to compete with lions and hyenas and to avoid becoming a meal themselves. Hyenas and vultures may swoop in to steal their food.

They have to eat the meal quickly so as to not loose their meal to another predator.

Cheetahs tend to hunt in the morning or at dusk.

About 90% of their diet is gazelle, but they will try and eat wildebeest and zebra when they get desperate. These are more dangerous because one sports horns while the other sports hard and heavy hooves which can wound the cheetah which in a sense will condemn it to death.

An injured cheetah is a dead cheetah. If they can't run, they can't get food, which will cause them to starve.

On their own an adult cheetah can go up to 5 days without a meal, but a mother and her cubs need to eat everyday.

Wide set eyes help as a cheetah runs and a protective membrane will cover them as they sprint.

They will use trees or rocks as look outs to spot prey.

Finally, they can run up to 75 miles per hour. Which is pretty awesome!

Haha, alright, have a good day!

-ologies I Bet You've Never Heard Before!

So, going through this week's readings for exercise physiology and archaeology (yes, quite different, just goes to show my interests vary), I came across some -ologies that I bet most people have never heard of!! For those who don't know, "-ology" refers to the study of something. For instance, psychology is the study of the psych, or the study of behavior and mind. These ologies are the same sort of thing except not so self-explanitory, or at least for me quite random.
  • Palynology - the study of pollen grains
  • Dendroclimatology - the study of tree-rings and climate
  • Paleoetomology - the study of insects
  • Archaeozoology/Zooarchaeology - the study of past human use of animals
  • Paleo-ethnobotany/Archaeobotony - the study of past human use of plants
  • Bioarchaeology - the study of human remains from archaeological sites
Alright, so that last one wasn't all that weird, but the others were ones that I had never heard of. So, that's my random facts for things. More little known things that now you know :)

Sci-Fi Spectacular!!

Alright, I'm from Milwaukee, yes city of beer and the Brewers. While this is what most people think about when they think of Milwaukee, but being a classically trained violinist myself I can't help but think about the symphony (yea, corny I know, but hey it's totally true!). Yes, I do still play the violin every once in a while (this summer for instance I will be playing in the summer theater musical Legally Blonde! Exiting stuff! But more on that later), but even more that that I would consider myself to be a Sci-Fi watcher. Movies and shows such as E.T., Twilight Zone, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly (space western!), X-Files and of course Star Wars are just a few of my favorites.
This past weekend, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra put on a Pops show called "Sci-Fi Spectacular". Conducted by Jack Everly and accompanied by the MSO Chorus, the MSO was joined by George Takei and Kristen Plumley to put on this treat for Sci-Fi lovers. All of the songs played were from different Sci-Fi shows and movies, it was pretty awesome! To give you a hint, here's what they ended up playing:

Act I/1st HalfStar Wars Opening
TV Show Medley (Lost in Syndication) (with bits from X-Files, Twilight Zone, The Jetsons, and Stargate)
E.T. - Adventures on Earth
Somewhere in Time
Superman - Kryptonite
GEORGE TAKAI speech
Star Trek with Narration by George Takai and soprano voice by Kristen Plumley

Intermission

Act II/2nd Half
2001: Space Odyssey
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
Star Wars (bar song from Tatooine earlier movies)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (with robot narration by George Takai)
When You Wish Upon A Star (not sure how this fits in exactly, but Kristen Plumley has an amazing voice!!)
Star Wars (A New Hope) (including: Darth Maul theme, the throne room theme, and the ending theme)

That was the show, and it was awesome!! Everly even used a lightsaber baton for the last Star Wars piece.
Random fact! I didn't know this but apparently the words during the Darth Maul theme are in Sand script, I knew that they were yelling something at me!

Well, there ya go, my nerdy side!
May the force be with you!

Books I Will Read!

Over this summer and perhaps into the oncoming semester I have a list of books that I want to read. They are ones that have either been suggested to me or ones that I have heard about or see and just want to read.
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson (yea I know, I'm a bit behind on this one, but I want to get it read as soon as I can!)
  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (again, behind on the upswing, but I'm working on it!)
  • Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger (classic! One that I just can't say no to!)
  • Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
  • Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
  • Murder on Astor Place by Victoria Thompson
So, these are the books for the rest of the summer and on into the next semester! Starting as soon as I can get my hands on everything, that is. Starting soon then :P

Alright,
That's all for now,
Bean :)
